Set up the shot.

Camera at eye level, pointing straight at you.

2 metres away (about 6 feet). Up close, the lens makes your nose look bigger and your face narrower. From 2 metres your proportions come out true.

Best: a friend takes it with the back camera at 2× zoom. Alone: lean your phone at eye level, set the camera timer, step back 2 metres.

No mirror selfies and no wide-angle (0.5×) lens.

Get the light right.

Face a window in daylight. Soft, even light on both sides of your face.

No ceiling light, no light behind you, no flash. Overhead light puts shadows under your eyes and hides your jawline.

No filters or beauty mode. They reshape your face and change the numbers.

Hold your face still.

Look straight into the lens, not at the screen. Head level, chin neither raised nor tucked.

Neutral face. Lips closed, jaw relaxed, teeth lightly together. Don't smile, clench or suck in your cheeks.

Hair off your forehead and ears. No glasses, hat or headphones.
